#SocialMediaTips with the Thinkspace Podcast
I recently chatted with @jossbiggins on the @thinkspacepodcast about the keys to social media success for the latter half of 2020 (listen to the episode HERE). It was a treat to lend some tidbits and takeaways from my 15 years as an avid user of social media for business. Here’s a breakdown of the episode!
The Keys to Social Media Success in 2020
A year like no other, the social media rulebook for businesses was tossed out in March. Digital aficionados like myself quickly began to pave new paths to success on social media.
As social media advisors, @socialtyvr used our toolkits to educate and inform businesses who may have found themselves forced to embrace digital for the first time, OR they needed guidance on how to pivot their social strategy to adapt to the changing times. My team and I have eagerly accepted the opportunity to help businesses succeed amidst all the change.
⬇️ Here are a few gems you’ll learn in this article:
🔮 The benefits of conducting a “social media audit”
💡 How to build meaningful collaborations with your network
🌎 Start to share the behind-the-scenes of your business
LISTEN TO YOUR AUDIENCE
When creating content for social media, look back at what people commented on or engaged with in the past and see if you can repurpose it. Know and evaluate what has worked for you previously and turn it into something fresh!
Don’t be afraid to test and see what works. Conducting an audit of your past content can help you gage new and creative ideas on what to share going forward.
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU
How are you interacting with your network and audience? How are you aligning with complimentary creators?
Here’s an example: Imagine a fitness instructor who collaborates with a musician whose songs they played at one of their workout classes. That’s an awesome collaboration that benefits everyone involved and is relevant to your business. There’s a vulnerability in reaching out to someone with an idea, and it’s really powerful!
Another #ProTip: Take the time to like and comment on content in your network. Your audience worked hard to create their content and would appreciate even a simple like!
SHARE YOUR PROCESS
Talk more about the process and behind the scenes of your brand or business. Essentially, give people an inside look at all the little things! What tools or software do you use? What does your podcast setup or workspace look like?
If you can educate people on the amount of energy it takes to produce a single piece of content, they’ll pay a premium price for it because they’ll know how much work went into it. Get people inspired and consumed by your process!
CREATE EXPERIENTIAL CONTENT
There is a quote I love that goes something like, “People don’t remember what you say or do, they remember how you made them feel.” Applying this principle to social media, ask yourself: How can you use social media to make people feel about your business and brand the way you do?
Not many people think about the “feelings” aspect of digital marketing. But if we’re able to create content that evokes feeling and emotion and spreads awareness, then social media can really be a platform for good!
WHAT’S A BIG SOCIAL TREND WE’RE NOTICING GOING FORWARD?
Authenticity - We’re seeing people on social media take themselves less seriously and learn to be more authentic. There is a lot less cautiousness around image and aesthetic and much more transparency around messaging. TikTok is a great example of people sharing content creatively and authentically, through song, dance or individual skills!
ADVICE FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING OUT ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Think of social media as a portfolio of what makes you different! It’s a platform that’s public if you want it to be, and a place for you to stand out. Find a niche and use it to share your skills and provide value to your audience.
DON’T GET DISCOURAGED BY THE NUMBERS
Don’t get stuck on the numbers, or feel bad about having fewer followers or likes. Instead, look at the data around your specific followers, analyze what they are enjoying consistently, and work to create more of that.
WHY ANALYTICS ARE A MUST
If there are five people coming to your website, find out how they found you, what they care about and what they are looking for, and dig into that further. This will help you figure out how you can create valuable content, drive a result and make an impact.
WORRIED ABOUT THE “ALGORITHM”?
We all have to start somewhere! If you want to be unique but are worried about the “algorithm” favouring certain hashtags or topics, ask yourself: How can I “remix” this piece of content? Figure out how to make it edgier, and entirely your own. Alternatively, take something common and “popular”, and give it your own personal spin!
TAKEAWAYS
